5. The Lord set the perfect example for us.
We have the responsibility to learn of Him, the things He taught and the things He did during His earthly ministry. Having learned these lessons, we are under commandment to follow His example.
Hebrew 10:19-25
19 Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, 20 by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain, that is, his body, 21 and since we have a great priest over the house of God, 22 let us draw near to God with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water. 23 Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. 24 And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, 25 not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.
1Peter 2:21-23
To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in His steps.
22 “He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in His mouth.”
23 When they hurled their insults at him, he did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats. Instead, he entrusted himself to him who judges justly.
John 8:12
When Jesus spoke again to the people, He said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.”
Following Jesus is the condition of two promises. First His followers will never walk in darkness, which is a reference to the assurance of salvation we enjoy. As true followers of the Light, we will never follow the ways of sin, never live in a state of continually sinning. Rather we repent of our sin in order to stay close to the Light of the world. The second promise is that we will reflect the Light of Life.
